From AJ: With great love and respect, I humbly present my tribute piece to the one and only Bob Weir titled “300 Years”. Prints will be available at Bottleneck Gallery as a timed edition beginning this Friday and running through the weekend, limited variant editions will also be available. A portion of the profits will be donated to Headcount an organization very close to Bobby and also the organization that opened the doors to the world of Grateful Dead art to me.
Bobby penned the musical soundtrack to my life and for that I’m forever grateful. Back in 2022 I was asked by headcount to create a series of custom guitars for them to auction off on the Dead and Company summer tour including a “special” fully decorated guitar celebrating the whole run. You can imagine my delight when Bobby decided to actually play that guitar on stage for multiple nights and instantly that auction bids skyrocketed for Headcount. Most people don’t know the rest of the story though, supposedly Bobby liked the guitar so much I was asked to make another (similar but not the same) guitar for his own personal collection. It’s not often you get to create a piece for one of your idols so I poured my heart and soul into that guitar and penned a line of gratitude directly to the man himself. A few months later I got to actually meet Bobby after a sound check at a local show. It was a brief meeting but I remember telling him “Yeah I’m the guy that did the those Ripple guitars for Headcount”. His eyes lit up, a big smile crossed his face and gave me the biggest hug, I will never ever forget that moment.
So in a somewhat selfish way, this piece embodies that personal experience of mine but also countless other moments in all of our lives as we followed and chased a band across the country and the world. “300 Years” refers to the musical legacy he often spoke of. Now it’s our turn to keep that legacy alive, I promise to do my part visually for as long as I’m able. Thank you Bobby, NFA
