We’re ending our week-long ode to all of the comic conventions that we’re missing this year with Raid71’s online art show dedicated to Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS)!
BTAS is the zenith of superhero cartoons from the 90s. A true labor of love from creative masterminds Paul Dini and Bruce Timm--the show fused noir storytelling with Art Deco design and architecture, and created a universe for Batman, including his friends and foes, that was both familiar, nuanced, and brilliant.
With his ever-evolving studies in color and style, BTAS became the ultimate playground for Raid to play in. As Raid tells it: “While researching Batman: The Animated Series I stumbled across this brief for the background artists. ‘Night in Gotham City. Only the faintest of rays of moonlight break through the steamy darkness. Shadows are black, twisted, and frightening. The thick night air carries many sounds: breaking glass, sputtering neon, harsh, bitter voices, and police sirens. Always police sirens. Most of Gotham’s daytime inhabitants have long since fled to the suburbs or into security-gated apartments. This is not a safe place after dark.’ Add in some 1930’s Art Deco architecture and I had all the information I needed to create the posters. (Naturally I rewatched every episode!)
Raid’s show features a deep dive of BTAS’ Gotham, including interpretations of the unforgettable opening to the series; Batman vs. his rogues gallery; BTAS’ movie; and some surprises!
Raid writes:
