J’s Zodiac Series interprets astrological signs through AJ’s unique lens, allowing for beautifully intricate pieces full of metaphors, symbols, and motifs. AJ’s Zodiac pieces are based on highly elaborate originals–per AJ, “Being a Libra myself, I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of balance and harmony. Typically represented by the scale, I wanted to take a more nuanced approach to the concept rendering this balance through composition and allegory.
The idea of the scale or weighing reminds me of the ancient Egyptian funerary custom of the Weighing of the Heart.
‘The ancient Egyptians believed that the heart recorded all of the good and bad deeds of a person's life, and was needed for judgment in the afterlife. After a person died, the heart was weighed against the feather of Maat (goddess of truth and justice). If a person had led a decent life, the heart balanced with the feather and the person was rendered worthy to live forever in paradise with Osiris.’ - Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Though our hearts often feel heavy, we continue on doing the best we can, hoping to find the balance we crave before stepping on that scale one last time.
