AJ Masthay is back with another jammin’ entry in our Jerry Garcia Artist Series!
AJ is the best guide for his pieces, so we’ll let him take this one: “Early 90s Grateful Dead always holds the most special place in my heart as that’s when I ““got on the bus"" as they say.
This is the Jerry that I spent my youth chasing up and down the east coast. This is the era that I fell in love with, not just for the music but for the scene and for the incredible people that made that scene. My first show was at Giants Stadium in 1992 and I had never in my life experienced anything close to it. Parking lots full of tie dyed wonder and a feeling as though you could walk up and hug complete strangers, I knew I was home. I spent the next 3 years going to as many shows as possible, hitching rides and sleeping on the sides of highways, all while also trying not to flunk out of art school, just to get to that next show.
Those were such special times and I tried to capture some of that joy and magic in this portrait. A rare moment of animation in Jerry’s stance and a bit of that sly smile. I admit I purposely tried to channel some of that Palm Sunday energy with the direct eye contact and lowered glasses, being the last of the main ““named guitars”” in the series, I just couldn’t help myself on this one. I sincerely hope you enjoy.”
