We’re excited to join AJ Masthay on his Jerry Garcia portrait journey with his newest print in the series, Sugaree!
We’ve been working with both the legacy of the Grateful Dead and AJ for a number of years, and we’re proud to announce our first officially licensed Jerry Garcia art through the Jerry Garcia Estate.
AJ is a scholar of the Dead and has created some of our favorite art inspired by the music and Jerry. Per AJ, “I am honored and humbled to present the next installment of my Jerry Garcia portrait series titled “Sugaree”.
"Continuing in the tradition of both Palm Sunday and Stella Blue, my motivation for Sugaree was to not only capture a likeness, but to capture the emotion and essence of what it was to see Jerry play live. The year is 1982, arena rock is at its height of popularity and Jerry is in what I feel is his most ‘classic’ look. Nothing says Jerry more to me than that beard, the hair and that black t-shirt - and of course his most played and perhaps most iconic guitar - Tiger. I don’t know that Sugaree was Jerry’s favorite tune but in all my research for this project, combing through hours of video footage and various photos, it always seemed like Jerry had a sly Mona Lisa smile on his face and a little extra bounce in his step when Sugaree came around. I hope you find I did him, and the era, justice. I’d like to personally thank the Garcia Family for the opportunity to create this piece and a huge thank you to everyone at Bottleneck Gallery for making this happen.”
AJ’s Sugaree portrait will be available for purchase on Wednesday (2/15) @ 12PM ET on our homepage, Bottleneckgallery.com!
